Common Door Stop Material Classification and Comparison

Common door stops are categorized into five main types by material which are rubber metal wood plastic and silicone and these materials show differences in durability anti-slip performance and applicable scenarios due to their varying physical properties with details as follows:

1. Rubber Door Stops

Rubber door stops are made of natural or synthetic rubber with good elasticity and wear resistance that can withstand daily extrusion and collision without cracking and have a service life of 3-5 years under normal use but they may age harden and develop surface cracks when exposed to high or low outdoor temperatures for a long time. Rubber door stops have high surface friction and can fit tightly on the ground (such as tiles and wooden floors) without additional anti-slip pads and they are not easy to shift even if the door shakes slightly so their anti-slip stability is outstanding among various materials. They are suitable for high-frequency indoor use scenarios such as home bedroom doors office doors and bathroom doors and can also be used in areas with frequent minor collisions (such as corridor doors and outside children's room doors) due to their strong impact resistance which can buffer the impact when the door is closed to avoid damage to the door frame.

2. Metal Door Stops

Metal door stops are mostly made of stainless steel cast iron or aluminum alloy with high hardness and deformation resistance that can resist extrusion impact temperature and humidity changes and are not easy to damage whether used indoors or outdoors with a service life of more than 5-10 years but cast iron door stops may have local rust if the surface anti-rust coating falls off and require regular maintenance. Metal surfaces are smooth and have weak inherent anti-slip performance so most metal door stops are equipped with rubber anti-slip pads or have concave-convex textures on the bottom to enhance friction with the ground and they are easy to shift on smooth floors (such as polished tiles) if the anti-slip pads are worn and not replaced in time so their anti-slip effect depends on the maintenance of accessories. They are suitable for outdoor scenarios (such as courtyard doors and entrance doors) or public areas with large passenger flow (such as shopping mall corridor doors and office building fire doors) that can withstand long-term high-frequency use and complex environmental impacts and some exquisitely designed metal door stops (such as brass ones) can also be used as indoor decorative door stops to match simple or industrial-style decoration.

3. Wooden Door Stops

Wooden door stops are usually made of solid wood (such as pine and oak) or compressed wood where natural solid wood has a beautiful texture but is afraid of moisture and insect infestation and is prone to mildew and deformation when in long-term contact with ground moisture while compressed wood has slightly improved moisture resistance after being pasted with waterproof stickers but has poor impact resistance and may have broken corners when hit by external forces. Wooden surfaces have moderate friction and usually need to be equipped with rubber pads or silicone pads to ensure anti-slip performance and they are easy to slide on smooth floors without anti-slip accessories; wooden door stops are also light in weight (usually 100-300g) and can be shifted by a slight push of the door so their anti-slip stability is weaker than that of rubber and silicone door stops. They are suitable for indoor low-frequency use scenarios that pay attention to the unity of decoration style such as home living room doors study doors or B&Bs and cafes that pursue a natural style and should be avoided in humid areas such as bathrooms and kitchens and are not suitable for outdoor use due to poor moisture resistance.

4. Plastic Door Stops

Plastic door stops are mostly made of PP (polypropylene) or ABS engineering plastics which are light in weight and low in cost but have low hardness and weak impact resistance that are prone to breakage and deformation when squeezed or dropped for a long time; plastic becomes brittle in low temperatures and softens in high temperatures so their service life is short and they usually need to be replaced every 1-2 years. Plastic surfaces are smooth and have poor anti-slip performance and most products are designed with grid patterns or pasted with thin silicone sheets on the bottom but the anti-slip effect is limited and they are easy to shift even with a slight push of the door on floors such as carpets and tiles so they are only suitable for static fixing scenarios where the door is not affected by external impact. They are suitable for temporary use or low-cost demand scenarios such as temporary door stops for rented houses temporary partition doors at exhibitions and lightweight door stops for children's playrooms and are easy for children and the elderly to move due to their light material but are not recommended for doors that need frequent use or long-term fixing.

5. Silicone Door Stops

Silicone door stops are made of food-grade or industrial-grade silicone with excellent flexibility that can be bent and squeezed arbitrarily without deformation and are resistant to high and low temperatures (-40℃ to 200℃) and not easy to age or turn yellow after long-term use but their surfaces are easy to absorb dust and may have oil penetration if they come into contact with oil (such as kitchen doors) and are not cleaned in time which affects their appearance and friction. Silicone itself has strong friction and can fit tightly on various ground materials (including carpets wooden floors and tiles) without additional anti-slip accessories and most silicone door stops are designed in wedge or arc shapes that can be embedded in door gaps to enhance fixing stability so their anti-slip stability is second only to rubber door stops. They are suitable for indoor refined scenarios such as children's rooms (silicone is soft and has no sharp edges to avoid collision injuries) kitchens (oil-resistant and easy to clean) and bedrooms (no abnormal noise when the door collides unlike metal or wooden door stops) and can also be used to fix small gaps of refrigerator doors and cabinet doors with a wide range of applications.
